Aberystwyth park and ride service decision delayed

Ceredigion council has delayed a decision on whether or not to continue funding a park and ride service in Aberystwyth.

Costing £69,000 a year to run, the service transports people in and around the town centre and to Bronglais Hospital.

The contract expires in August and a report that went before cabinet on Tuesday recommended not renewing it.

But it was decided to defer a decision until the next cabinet meeting in July.

A new development in the town and changes to access at the hospital had influenced the recommendation.

The Mill Street development will become operational in the autumn and will provide 555 town centre car parking spaces, with most being free for three hours.

This, the report states, will "drastically change the parking patterns in and around Aberystwyth".

The current park and ride provides access to the hospital via Caradog Road, but in September, Hywel Dda University Health Board will be closing the entrance for nine months to carry out refurbishments.

The council said no operator has shown an interest in taking over the park and ride as a commercial service and that the health board said it would not consider making a contribution to its running.
