A former outdoor activities instructor at north east Wales children's homes has appeared in court accused of sexually assaulting a boy.

Appearing at Dolgellau Magistrates Court, Richard Vevar, 62, indicated he would deny two offences of indecent assault against the 14-year-old.

The alleged offences took place between January 1986 and January 1989 at Bontddu near Dolgellau.

At the time, Mr Vevar was employed by the Bryn Alyn Community Care Homes.

The former teacher, from Wrexham, was released on conditional bail to appear at Caernarfon Crown Court on 9 June.

He is the second man to be charged in the investigation called Operation Pallial which was set up after allegations of abuse emerged from children aged between six and 19 who had been at care homes across north Wales between 1953 and 1995.

Twenty people have been arrested since it began in November 2012.

Another man, John Allen, 72, has been charged with a string of child sex offences and awaits trial later this year.
