Wales and West Utilities repair gas in Penrhyndeudraeth

Gas supplies have been restored in a Gwynedd town after 500 properties were left cut off.

Engineers from Wales and West Utilities (WWU) worked for most of Saturday to fix the problem in Penrhyndeudraeth. Supplies returned to normal by 21:00 GMT.

Residents were offered alternative cooking and heating facilities while repair work was carried out.

WWU apologised for the inconvenience caused by the gas failure.

Engineers were required to visit every home and business affected by the outage to check that gas equipment was working normally.

WWU said staff left contact details at any properties where no-one was in and engineers will return later to make sure supplies are safe.

Local councillor Gareth Thomas said supplies were lost from about 18:00 on Friday.
