Six Anglesey public houses are to close for three days after selling alcohol to under-age drinkers.

The 72-hour ban is being imposed after a police operation.

North Wales Police say the licensees opted to close as an alternative to prosecution.

The pubs are the Crown Inn, Bodedern; Liverpool Arms, Amlwch; Gazelle and Victoria Hotel, both in Menai Bridge; Tafarn Ty Gwyn, Llanfairpwll and the George and Dragon in Beaumaris.

The temporary closures are the result of "test purchase operations" in which alcohol was sold to people under 18 years of age on two separate occasions within a three month period.

'Joint aim'

On the second occasion in December nine bar staff were issued with £80 fixed penalty notices and six licensees were issued with the optional closure notice.

The Crown Inn and Tafarn Ty Gwyn will close from 4-7 January.

The Gazelle, Victoria Hotel, George and Dragon, Liverpool Arms will close between 11-14 January.

Anglesey acting inspector Gethin Jones said the initiative to tackle sales to under age people will continue in partnership with the Anglesey Council Licensing Department.

"Our joint aim is to tackle sales to under age person and reduce age related alcohol anti-social behaviour," he said.

"We ask that all licensees contact the licensing department to take part in their training programme."
