Five rescued at Amlwch as speedboat hits rocks

Five people have been rescued after their speedboat was struck by a big wave off Anglesey.

Two were flown to hospital by an RAF helicopter having swallowed water after the boat drifted ashore onto rocks near Amlwch around 14:40 BST on Saturday.

The other three people on board were picked up by the Moelfre lifeboat and landed at Llaneilian.

One of them was later being flown to hospital by air ambulance from Caernarfon.

Holyhead coastguards said they had picked up a faint mayday call and had to replay the recording several times before identifying Amlwch as a possible location.

They rebroadcast the appeal to other vessels and made contact with the stricken boat just as the RAF helicopter reached the scene between Point Lynas and Amlwch.
