Sea scooter riders flown to hospital after Porthmadog collision

Two sea scooter riders have been airlifted to hospital after they were in a collision off the coast of Gwynedd.

A woman, 22, suffered severe leg injuries and a man has head injuries after the incident at Porthmadog, say Holyhead coastguards.

The collision happened at 15:12 BST on Sunday.

Coastguards issued a warning after the "second serious jet-ski collision we have witnessed in the last week".

An RAF rescue helicopter from Valley on Anglesey and the North Wales air ambulance were sent to the scene at Samson's Bay.

Criccieth coastguard rescue team, the RNLI lifeboat and police and ambulance were also involved in the rescue.

The RNLI said the incident happened near the Powder House at the entrance to the estuary.

The woman was airlifted to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor by air ambulance and the man was taken to the same hospital by the crew from RAF Valley.

Holyhead Coastguard watch manager Jim Green said: "We want the public to have fun on our beautiful beaches but these are very powerful and dangerous machines.

"If you are considering taking one out to water, please ensure you have enough expertise to handle it - keep it slow and under control at all times."

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch is aware of the incident and North Wales Police is leading the investigation into what happened.

A 12-year-old boy was airlifted to hospital after a collision with his kayak and a sea scooter.

It happened off Abersoch beach in Gwynedd shortly before 17:40 BST on Friday.
