A solicitor found dead on a beach had been facing criminal proceedings.

The body of Gareth Evans, 64, from Llanbedr, Gwynedd, was found by a walker at Morfa Bychan, Black Rock Sands, near Porthmadog, on Friday.

A case was listed in his name at Llandudno magistrates' court alleging forgery involving a Land Registry form in 2009.

Mr Evans was a former deputy high sheriff of Meirionnydd and former clerk to Dolgellau Town Council.

Police, a lifeboat and RAF rescue helicopter had searched for the solicitor after he disappeared.

His car was found at Barmouth and the search for him concentrated on the Mawddach estuary area.

The north west Wales coroner, Dewi Pritchard-Jones, has begun an investigation into the death.

Mr Evans was married with three daughters.
