Plans to build a 40-bed extra care residential centre in Porthmadog have been given the go ahead by councillors.

The closed Hafod y Gest home will be demolished to make way for one and two bed units providing independent living to older and vulnerable people, according to housing group Grŵp Cynefin.

It plans to start building work next summer.

The proposals were approved by Gwynedd council planning committee on Monday.

A report to councillors said the existing home was built 40 years ago and was proposed as a temporary structure but only closed last year.

The homes plan was given the go ahead but further work will be required regarding an access road.
