Penygroes man jailed for fireworks house fire

A man who set a giant box of fireworks alight in a bedroom while drunk and started a fire which wrecked his family home has been jailed.

Daniel Ellis, 22, of Penygroes, Gwynedd, took a lighter to the firework fuse while six people were in the house, including his two year old daughter and parents.

He pleaded guilty to arson, being reckless whether life was endangered, at Caernarfon Crown Court.

He was jailed for 34 months.

That included two months for previous suspended sentences for shoplifting.

The house was being renovated at the time of the fire and an earlier hearing was told the damage amounted to £60,000, but it was not yet known whether an insurance company would honour the claim.
