An 85-year-old man who failed to phone to check whether it was safe to cross a railway before he drove in front of a train has been given a four-month suspended jail sentence.

Jack Elliott, of Dyffryn Ardudwy, in Gwynedd, was in collision with a train carrying 30 passengers as he left Royal St David's Golf Club at Harlech.

He pleaded guilty at Dolgellau Magistrates' Court to endangering safety on the railway on 25 November.

Elliott must also pay £165 costs.
