Labour will choose its candidate to replace former Welsh Secretary Paul Murphy as MP for Torfaen from an open shortlist.

The party's ruling national executive council decided not to use its power to impose an all-women shortlist, a controversial policy in some areas.

Mr Murphy, MP for the borough since 1987, has announced he is stepping down at the general election in May.

A new candidate will be chosen by the Labour party in March.
