Cardiff Council warns of council tax phone scam

Residents are being urged not to give their bank account details over the phone to anyone claiming to be from Cardiff Council's tax office.

The warning comes after reports of calls taking place asking for bank details so they can receive a refund due to overpayment of council tax.

Councillor Mark Stephens, executive member for finance says the council would never make such calls.

"If something sounds too good to be true it probably is," he said.

"Unfortunately there are unscrupulous people out there who want to scam people out of their money and the tactics they use are very convincing."

Anyone who may have any questions about the scam can contact Connect 2 Cardiff on 029 2087 2087 or Consumer Direct Wales on 0808 156 6736.
