St Mary's Canton, Cardiff church roof theft arrests

Plain clothes police have arrested three teenagers on suspicion of stealing lead from a church roof in Cardiff early on Monday.

Officers were already near St Mary's Church in Kings Road, Canton after a number of recent burglaries.

A 14-year-old and 17-year-old male were arrested before a 19-year-old man was spotted on the roof of the church.

Police said a sheet of lead believed to have been removed from the roof was recovered.

South Wales Police said there were increased patrols in the area after a number of burglaries in the Pontcanna area.

"When a call came into the control room at 1.30am about individuals possibly on the roof of St Mary's Church it was extremely pleasing that officers were in the right place a the right time," said Sergeant Jayne Hill.

The three arrested remain in custody, she added.

"Metal theft is not a victim less crime and stealing from a church, which provides refuge and comfort to the community, will not be tolerated," she added.

Operation Lilac is continuing in the Canton and Pontcanna area, police added.

There is also a reminder to residents to ensure their doors and windows are locked.

  • In another incident two other men, aged 22, were arrested in Birchgrove, Cardiff, on suspicion of stealing lead from a house.
