Man hurt in Treherbert 'alcohol brewing' explosion

A man has been injured in an explosion and fire in Treherbert, Rhondda Cynon Taf which police say is thought to have been caused by brewing alcohol.

Police, firefighters and the Welsh Ambulance Service were called to Alma Street at 23:34 BST on Tuesday.

A 44-year-old man was taken to Morriston Hospital in Swansea with burns to his face and hands. His condition is not life threatening.

Neighbouring houses were evacuated as a precaution.

The fire spread through the roof voids of three houses.

One fire engine from Treorchy, two from Tonypandy, one from Ferndale and a water bowser from Aberdare were called to the scene.

A spokeswoman for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was under control by 02:30 BST.

An inquiry is continuing, but a police spokesman said they are satisfied that it was not a commercial operation and the man was not doing anything illegal.
