Newport's legendary rock venue TJ's is to become a themed restaurant after selling at auction for £242,000.

The former nightclub on Clarence Place closed last year after the death of long-term owner John Sicolo.

It has been bought by a father and son from Cardiff who plan to convert the upstairs into flats and a TJ's themed restaurant on the ground floor.

It was at TJ's Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain reputedly proposed to singer Courtney Love.

It went on the market with Paul Fosh Auctions with a guide price of £175,000.

Mr Fosh said: "There was a great deal of interest leading up to the sale of what was an iconic club in Newport."

It was bought by Cardiff man Ozzeer Hassan and his father Mehmood.

Mr Hassan said: "We want to preserve the TJ's image with a themed restaurant."
