Tributes have been paid to a former council leader and vicar, described as a "legend" in Cardiff, who has died.

Canon Bob Morgan was vicar at the Church of the Resurrection in the city's Ely district and once led the Labour-controlled South Glamorgan County Council.

He was the father of former Euro MP, Baroness Eluned Morgan.

Cardiff council offered its condolences to Canon Morgan's family and said he had made a "huge contribution".

Cardiff West MP Kevin Brennan said: "Bob was a legend in Ely, where his home at the Church of the Resurrection became an open house for the local community and its needs.

"I had the pleasure of visiting Bob on several occasions in his retirement in Pembrokeshire, and he remained passionate about the need for social change long after he retired from front-line politics.

"He will be sorely missed by his wife Elaine, with whom I served on the Cardiff City Council, and by his family including Baroness Eluned Morgan, my Labour parliamentary colleague, and also by many people from the Ely ward in Cardiff West."

Cardiff council said: "Bob was long-serving member, leader and chairman of South Glamorgan council who made a huge contribution to the city."
