Shoppers in Merthyr are to be consulted on a proposed £30m development at the town's retail park.

London-based company Hammerson will hold a series of public events at Cyfarthfa Retail Park and in the town centre starting from Thursday.

The company will explain the plans, which go before the council in January, and ask the public what they think.

If given the go-ahead, the expansion could create 550 jobs and attract big names, like Marks and Spencer.

The first event will take place on Thursday at the park's Costa Coffee from 14:00-20:00 GMT.

The second will be held at Market Place in the town centre on Monday, 9 January from 10:00-16:00 GMT.

Hammerson development executive Russell Beresford encouraged shoppers to find out more about the development.

He said: "The demand we're seeing from retailers to come to Cyfarthfa Retail Park demonstrates the confidence they have in Merthyr Tydfil and we believe this extension will further cement the town's position as the leading shopping destination in the Heads of the Valleys."
