Newport handbag robbery victim, 81, taken to hospital

Gwent Police are appealing for information after an 81-year-old woman was injured when her handbag was grabbed in the street.

The robbery took place at around 09:40 GMT on Friday in Capel Crescent, Newport. The man asked for directions and then ran off with her handbag.

The woman was treated at the Royal Gwent hospital for head and leg injuries and was later released.

The attacker, aged between 20 and 30, was wearing a bomber jacket and jeans.

Gwent police said the woman fell over during the incident. The man ran off in the direction of Alma Street.

Officers said the attacker was white, approximately 5 feet 6 inches (167cm) to 5 feet 8 inches (172cm) tall.

As well as the black bomber jacket, he was wearing a light coloured hooded top, with the hood up.

Gwent police say that any witnesses or anyone else with information should contact them on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
