A new £40m campus has officially opened at Coleg Morgannwg in Nantgarw, near Pontypridd.

The college says its Nantgarw Campus represents the largest single investment in further education in Wales.

A-Level students have a choice of 24 subjects, which the college says has led to a three-fold increase in applications this year.

The Welsh government funded £20m of the work under grants announced in 2009.

The campus is designed over four floors, and subjects taught include information technology, care and childhood studies, sport, catering, hair and beauty, and music and performing arts.

It also includes a creche, coffee shop, restaurant, hair and beauty salon and library.

Aberdare-born Dr Lyn Evans, the head of the project searching for the so-called Higgs boson God particle, attended the official opening.
