Cat dies after Newport air rifle shooting, says RSPCA

A cat has died after being shot with an air rifle, said the RSPCA.

Inspectors are warning pet owners to be vigilant following the incident near Courtney Street in Newport on Saturday.

The cat died of a heart attack while undergoing treatment. Gwent Police are investigating.

RSPCA inspector Nicola Johnson said: "It is distressing to think that people take pleasure in causing such horrific injuries with such deliberate acts of cruelty".

She said it was a "mindless attack on a defenceless animal".

The RSPCA said that under the Animal Welfare Act people who caused unnecessary suffering to animals faced a £20,000 fine or up to six months in prison.
