A449 Newport lorry and van crash kills one

Police said one person died and another was seriously injured in a crash on the main road between Newport and Usk.

A lorry and a van were in collision on the A449 about one mile from the M4 motorway at about 14:15 BST.

One person in the van was pronounced dead at the scene. The second person, a man, was taken to University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff by air ambulance with "life threatening" injuries.

The lorry driver suffered minor injuries, Gwent Police said.

He was taken by ambulance to the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport.

The road was closed for around six hours before the northbound carriageway was reopened on Monday evening.

The southbound carriageway, earlier reported to have reopened, was expected to reopen shortly afterwards.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said crews from Malpas, Maindee and Usk were sent to the scene.

Witnesses are asked to call Gwent Police on 101 quoting log 229 09/09/13.
