Plans to merge two secondary schools in Torfaen to reduce the number of surplus spaces have been approved.

Llantarnam Comprehensive and Fairwater High School, both in Cwmbran, will close and £6m will be spent redeveloping a new school at the Fairwater site.

Councillors said Fairwater was the right size for the redevelopment and was centrally located for most pupils.

The new school is expected to open in September 2015.

The merger was put forward because pupil numbers at both schools have fallen steadily over the past four years and are expected to drop further by 2018.

As a result of the merger, school catchment areas in Cwmbran will be reviewed and students living closer to the town's other secondary school, Croesyceiliog, will be able to attend there from 2015.
