Two children and a woman have been seriously hurt after being hit by a van in Cardiff.

The van left the carriageway colliding with the two boys and a woman near the Forge Youth Centre on the A48 Cowbridge Road West in Ely, said police.

Their injuries are not thought to be life threatening but they have been taken to hospital.

A 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving. Drivers have been told to avoid the area.

The incident happened at around 15:15 BST as many schools in the city closed for the day.

The road was closed in both directions between Green Farm Road and Crossways Road and Caerau Lane but has since reopened.

A spokesman for the Welsh Ambulance Service said: "We responded with paramedics in three rapid response cars, crews in two emergency ambulances, a doctor, an ambulance officer and a Wales Air Ambulance.

"Three patients - two children and one adult - were taken by land ambulance to the University Hospital of Wales."
