A heroin addict has been sentenced to a minimum of 20 years for murdering a man just five days after leaving jail.

Gareth Wyn Jones launched a "sustained and brutal attack" on vulnerable David Alun Lewis for his bank card pin.

Cardiff Crown Court heard he was hit with a rock and a broken bottle suffering 80 head injuries before being strangled and left in the River Taff.

Jones, 28, had just been released from half of a six-year jail sentence after stabbing his girlfriend with a fork.

The court heard how Jones had picked out Mr Lewis, who was described as "fairly quiet and a bit of a loner", at a hostel just 90 minutes before attacking and killing the Ystrad Mynach singer-songwriter.

After stealing £50 from Mr Lewis, Jones used the money to pay for a drugs binge before attempting to withdraw money with the victim's card.

The body of Mr Lewis, who had spent the greater part of his life battling anxiety, depression and alcohol abuse, and staying in Cardiff hostels from time to time, was found under the Taff Embankment Bridge in Cardiff on 19 March.

Jones had pleaded guilty to manslaughter, but denied murder on the grounds of diminished responsibility. A jury unanimously found him guilty.

Sentencing, Mrs Justice Nicola Davies said the murder was "sustained and brutal" and a "calculated pre-meditated killing for gain".

She added: "Only you know what exactly happened on that desolate embankment below Penarth Road Bridge.

"What is clear is that you attacked David Lewis using a rock and a broken bottle, you also attempted to strangle him."

Jones was given a mandatory life sentence and ordered to serve a minimum term of 20 years before being considered for release.
