19 arrests after disturbance in Newport

A total of 19 people have been arrested following a disturbance in Newport in which two people needed hospital treatment for minor injuries.

Gwent Police said it is believed private land owners were attempting to remove people from the area when trouble flared at Albany Street at 07:15 BST on Thursday.

A number of weapons have been seized, including bladed and blunt objects.

Two women were among those arrested. The detainees' ages vary from 15 to 51.

A Gwent Police spokesperson said: "Police remain at the scene conducting enquiries and searches and will mount additional patrols in the area in the coming days to provide reassurance for residents."
