Matthew Williams: Cannibalism victim Cerys Yemm's inquest opens

An inquest into the death of Cerys Yemm who was murdered in an act of cannibalism has been opened and adjourned.

The 22-year-old, from Blackwood, Caerphilly county, was found at the Sirhowy Arms hostel, Argoed, on Thursday 6 November.

The inquest heard she died as a result of a "sharp force trauma to the face and neck".

Her attacker Matthew Williams, 34, died after police stunned him with a Taser.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating.

Funeral arrangements

Det Supt William Davies of Gwent Police told the inquest in Newport that officers found Ms Yemm at the hotel.

"Upon arrival officers found the body of a female on the floor of the hotel," he said.

"She was pronounced dead at the scene by attending ambulance personnel.

"Matthew Williams was arrested and detained but died a short time later."

Senior coroner for Gwent David T Bowen released Ms Yemm's body to her family for funeral arrangements to be made.
