One of the main roads through Abergavenny was closed in both directions following the blaze at an Indian restaurant on Monk Street.

Fire crews were called to Sundarbon Bengal Cuisine at 03:26 GMT and rescued three people from a property next door.

The A40 Monk Street remained closed off between Lower Castle Street and Lion Street into Saturday evening.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said the "serious fire" is now under control.

At the height of the fire, eight fire engines were at the blaze and crews evacuated nearby properties as they battled to stop the fire spreading.

Five engines remain at the scene.

Police and the fire service are investigating the cause of the blaze.
