Two businesses have been wrecked after a fire broke out in a Newbridge town centre building which had fireworks inside.

Five properties were evacuated due to the blaze at a charity shop in Main Street in the Caerphilly county town at about 12:25 GMT.

A coffee shop has also been destroyed. Two fire crews remain on the scene damping down on Wednesday evening.

Newbridge High Street has been closed.

It will open after the building has been given a safety check by South Wales Fire and Rescue Service.

Earlier, as firefighters tackled the blaze, an eyewitness said: "We could see the black smoke as we were coming home.

"It's bad, really bad. Every time they put water on it the flames shoot up."

A fire service spokesman confirmed fireworks were in the rear of the building.
