Police say a body found in a field in Cwmbran is thought to be that of missing renowned artist Roger Cecil.

The 72-year-old dementia sufferer from Abertillery was last seen on Saturday at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport.

His body was found by a member of the public in a field off Treherbert Road at about 16:15 GMT on Tuesday.

Gwent Police are treating the death as unexplained and have referred the case to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

A statement from the force said the referral relates to the fact a witness spoke to a Gwent Police officer before Mr Cecil's body was found.

It added: "We believe Mr Cecil was picked up by a concerned member of the public at about 12.45am Sunday morning on the A4042 between Newport and Llanyrafon.

"Mr Cecil was then dropped off close to Treherbert Road (off the A4042) at about 1am Sunday morning and this was the last confirmed sighting of him."

The force added 50 officers, dogs and a helicopter were involved in the search for the artist.

A spokesman for the Royal Gwent Hospital said Mr Cecil had not been a patient at the Royal Gwent Hospital at the time he went missing.

He added: "The health board and our staff share the sadness expressed by so many on the news of Mr Cecil's sad death and send our deepest condolences to his family and friends at his loss, in such tragic circumstances."
