A cannabis factory capable of producing more than £250,000 of the drug a year has been uncovered at a traveller site in Merthyr Tydfil.

More than 100 police and National Crime Agency officers carried out a raid at the Glynmill site on Wednesday morning.

Cannabis with an estimated street value of £60,000- £70,000 was found growing in 12 of the 24 site plots.

South Wales Police said 16 people had been arrested in connection with the production of cannabis.

Three more people have been arrested on suspicion of other offences.

Ch Insp Phillip Ashby said officers acted on intelligence to discover the "sophisticated operation".
