Three teenagers arrested over grass fire in Tonypandy

Three teenagers have been arrested for deliberately starting a grass fire in Rhondda Cynon Taff.

A member of the public called police at just after 23:00 BST on Thursday after a seeing a group of people acting suspiciously in the grounds of the old Llwynypia Hospital in Tonypandy.

An attempt had been made to set fire to a mattress in open grassland.

Three youths, two aged 15 and a 14-year-old, were arrested and bailed pending further enquiries.

South Wales Police Det Ch Insp Mark Lewis said: "We would ask parents to question why any child would be left to their own devices at this time of the night.

"Parents have a duty to know exactly what their children are up to."

More than 100 separate incidents across Rhondda Cynon Taff and Merthyr Tydfil have been reported to police since the beginning of March 2015.

The Rhondda Valley has suffered more grass fires than any other south Wales area.

To date, 19 people have been arrested in connection with causing deliberate grass fires across the region.
