Inquiry after man dies at Llanelli steel products site

An investigation is under way after a man died at a steel products company in Llanelli on Friday.

Pawel Pagos, 40, suffered fatal injuries at Dyfed Steels on Dafen Industrial Park after apparently becoming trapped by a lorry.

Dyfed-Powys Police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) are conducting a joint investigation and are studying CCTV footage of the site.

The company said Mr Pagos was "liked and respected" by his colleagues.

The incident happened at about 0540 BST.

Det Insp Gary Phillips said: "It is unclear as to what happened. It is believed he was going on a lorry but became trapped and suffered fatal injuries.

"We will be looking at CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses to try and understand what happened."

An HSE spokeswoman said: "The Health and Safety Executive is aware of a fatal incident at the Dyfed Steels site in Llanelli which occurred on Friday, 30 July.

"An investigation is now being carried out jointly with Dyfed-Powys Police."

Dyfed Steels company secretary John Morgan said that "as a local employer this is a deeply distressing time for us all".

He said: "A Polish national living in Llanelli, Pawel had been an LGV fitter with our company since April 2005.

"Pawel was a well liked and respected member of our team. Our thoughts are now with his family and friends.

"We take the responsibility for the health and safety of our staff very seriously and we are therefore co-operating fully with the Health and Safety Executive and Dyfed-Powys Police."

Halina Ashley, who runs the Polish Centre in Llanelli, said: "The news has spread like wildfire.

"We are only a small community. Everybody is stunned and shocked."
