Ronald Toms jailed for Ammanford OAP sex attack in 1987
A man has been jailed for 15 years after being finally caught for a sex attack on an 84-year-old widow in 1987.
Ronald Toms, 51, of Ammanford, Carmarthenshire, attempted to rape the terrified pensioner late at night after a break-in.
Toms was only caught when arrested for a petty offence late last year and his DNA matched to the crime scene.
A judge said he had robbed the frail pensioner of her "right to live her final years in peace".
Father-of-two Toms had admitted attempted rape and another sex charge at a previous hearing at Swansea Crown Court.
The court heard at the time of the attack in July 1987 he lived just 150 metres away from his victim.
When police turned up at Toms's house to arrest him in March he told them: "I've been waiting for you to come for 20 years."
The court heard the pensioner had never recovered from the ordeal.
Among her injuries were two black eyes and bruising to her arms where she had been held down. She spent two weeks in hospital.
Fluid had been left on a bed sheet by Toms in 1987 but at the time it was not sufficient for a full DNA profile.
However Dyfed-Powys Police kept the evidence and advances in technology made that possible in 2004.
The result was placed on the National Police Database and following Toms's arrest late last year for a public order offence a match was made.
The court heard Toms had no previous convictions.
Passing sentence Judge Keith Thomas told him he would be ordered to register as a sex offender for life.
"You robbed this woman of her right to live out her final years in peace and comfort," he added.
"She died in 1995 still fearing you would return and further humiliate her."
