Man died in tyre explosion at work in Pumsaint

Police have confirmed that a man in Carmarthenshire died when a tyre exploded while he was working on it.

Emergency services were called to Thomas Rees & Son, Pumsaint, at about 09:35 BST on Wednesday.

Dyfed-Powys Police said the man who died had been working on the tyre at The Forge, a small family metal fabrication business in the centre of the village.

Witnesses said the sound of the explosion was heard over a wide area.

Police and Health and Safety Executive officers are investigating the incident, and the Carmarthenshire Coroner has been informed.

One neighbour who passed the site shortly after the incident said the man was taken to hospital by air ambulance.

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokeswoman said: "Dyfed-Powys Police can confirm a man died after an industrial tyre exploded under pressure, and not from a gas explosion as reported widely in the media.

"Dyfed-Powys Police are working in conjunction with the Health and Safety Executive due to the incident being work related, although no other persons are involved and the incident and scene does not present a danger to other members of the public."

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue service said two fire crews from Lampeter and Llandovery had been sent to the scene.
