Flintshire councillors reject Alltami landfill site

Controversial plans to open a second landfill tip near Buckley, Flintshire, have been rejected by councillors after a site visit.

Opponents claimed the proposals by Brock plc for the Pinfold Quarry, Alltami, could blight the area for years.

County councillors went against advice from planners who recommended the plan for approval on Wednesday.

Another landfill tip at nearby Parry's Quarry away was approved two years ago.

The company behind that development, Robin Jones and Sons, won permission on appeal, but is still awaiting an operational permit from the Environment Agency.

In 2010, Flintshire councillors deferred a decision on Pinfold Quarry, saying they needed more information.

A report says the company has now submitted more information and officers believe any "potential negative impacts" can be managed by proper controls.

It adds: "On balance, the proposal is considered to offer a sustainable means of managing waste arising in Flintshire and the surrounding area".

The plan was to use the tip to take waste from industry, construction and demolition and municipal sectors.

Councillors on the planning committee made their decision after attending the site earlier on Wednesday.
