Royal Mail missed its first-class mail delivery target in three areas of Wales in the busy run up to Christmas.

Swansea, Newport and Llandrindod Wells postcode areas all fell below the firm's 91.5% next working day delivery target in the three months to the second week in December.

The introduction of operational changes was blamed for this.

North west Wales postcode area was the best performer with 92.2% of first-class deliveries being made on time.

Alex Warner, regional operations director for Wales, said: "We are pleased that the majority of our postcode sectors in the Wales region exceeded individual quality of service target of 91.5%.

"In the cases where we failed to meet the target, our services were affected by operational changes introduced in the region as part of the major transformation of our mails business.

"We have put robust improvement plans in place for these postcode sectors (NP, SA and LD postcodes) which are already achieving improvements.

"We remain committed to ensuring that we deliver the best possible service to all our customers across the region."
