Tributes to Amman Valley councillor Roy Harries

Tributes have been paid to the former Carmarthenshire councillor Roy Harries, who has died at the age of 85.

Colleagues said the community of the Amman Valley would be poorer after the death of a man described as a role model.

He had been Cwmamman Labour Party's longest serving member, a former mayor of the old Dinefwr borough council, and served on the county council.

His funeral will be held at Bethania Chapel in Glanamman on Wednesday.

"It is difficult to measure the full extent of his contribution to the local community," said the leader of Carmarthenshire council, Kevin Madge.

"The village of Glanamman was very close to his heart and he was very proud to be able to represent the needs and aspirations of local people.

"I learned a great deal from working closely with Roy as the representative of the neighbouring council division.

"He was very much a role model for me in my early days in local politics. Glanamman and the Amman Valley as a whole is much the poorer for his passing."

Mr Harries was married to his wife Estella, and is also survived by his four daughters, and four grandchildren.
