Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen opens new £8.8m unit

A new multi-million pound assessment unit has opened at Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen.

The £8.8m clinical decision unit (CDU) is aimed at improving admissions into the hospital and supporting GPs.

Patients will be referred to the new department by a GP or accident and emergency doctor.

Hywel Dda Health Board chief executive Trevor Purt said the unit would enhance patient care and improve facilities for staff.

"The CDU is a key component in improving access to unscheduled care by increasing capacity at the decision-making area of Glangwili Hospital," he said.

"It will also support our staff to deliver a quality service, enhancing the patient environment and facilities for staff."

Patients can be referred to CDU with a wide range of medical conditions and an assessment is carried out to determine whether they need to be admitted, or treated at home or in the community.
