An arsonist who tried to torch a Swansea nightclub with 200 people inside has been jailed for seven years.

Craig Cullen, 29, was caught on CCTV throwing petrol over the back door of the city centre Oxygen venue, setting his own shoes on fire in the process.

He was jailed at Swansea Crown Court on Monday after admitting arson with intent to endanger life at a previous hearing.

Judge Mervyn Hughes QC said the public needed protecting from Cullen.

Cullen started the fire after getting in an argument with his ex-girlfriend, telling her that if she went into the club without him he would torch it.

The court was played CCTV which showed him climbing the steel fire escape at the club.

Cullen is then seen splashing petrol all over the steel door before taking a lighter from his pocket and igniting it.

His clothes and shoes catch fire and he is seen trying to sprint away from the scene pursued by a members of staff in the early hours of April 20 this year.
