A woman has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after her mother suffered multiple stab wounds.

Emergency services were called to a disturbance at Gwyrddgoed Road, Pontardawe, at 17:45 BST on Tuesday.

The 63-year-old victim was taken to Swansea's Morriston Hospital where her condition is serious but stable.

Her daughter, 32, has been released into the care of the health service after being detained under the Mental Health Act, said South Wales Police.

Det Insp Trudi Meyrick, of Neath Port Talbot CID, said: "This is a very serious incident which has understandably shocked the community."

A forensic examination was due to take place on Wednesday and officers were expected to carry out house-to-house inquiries.
