Roof collapse as fire engulfs furniture shop on City Road, Cardiff

A massive fire at a Cardiff discount furniture shop, which caused the building's roof to collapse, led to part of a busy main road being closed.

A total of 51 firefighters tackled the fire on City Road at the height of the incident which began at 18:10 BST.

The road was closed between its junction with Newport Road and The Parade and Talworth Street.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is due to begin on Friday morning.

South Wales Police said people should be prepared for road closures on Friday.

As the fire engulfed the building on Thursday evening, smoke could be seen billowing from the building from as far away as Penarth in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Jennie Griffiths, head of South Wales fire service's joint fire control, tweeted to say crews were due to be scaled back after 22:00 BST.

She said firefighters had been working to protect adjacent buildings and advised people to avoid the area.

Welsh Water sent a text message to customers in the area, warning them their water may be discoloured due to the fire service fighting the blaze.
