My dad, Charlie Chaplin

The world’s most iconic silent movie star was accused of communist sympathies and refused re-entry into the USA. He spent 20 years in exile, before eventually returning in April 1972 to receive a special Oscar award. Chaplin’s son Eugene spoke to Witness about his father.

Eugene Chaplin is one of Charlie Chaplin's 11 children.

He was born in Switzerland, where Chaplin and his fourth wife, Oona, had gone to live after the actor was accused of communist sympathies and refused re-entry into the USA.

Chaplin had been the biggest star in Hollywood's silent movie era.

Eugene Chaplin speaks to Witness about life at home in the family's Swiss mansion, and about his father's love-hate relationship with America.
