BP oil spill: Your experiences
What impact has the BP oil spill had on you?
BP says the latest work towards permanently plugging the ruptured oil well in the Gulf of Mexico has achieved the 'desired outcome'. The operation, known as 'static kill' cannot be completed until engineers have finished drilling a relief well, which is expected to be completed next week.
Following the release of the US government's latest estimate, the Deepwater Horizon disaster is confirmed as the biggest ever accidental release of oil into the oceans. It exceeds the 1979 Ixtoc I leak which was also in the Gulf of Mexico and the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill.
However, Simon Boxall from the National Oceanography Centre at Southampton University, says that the warm climate and the distance of the leak from the shore, have limited the damage. The oil has dispersed and evaporated before reaching the coast. Boxall describes the BP spill as 'a drop in the ocean'. He denies that the Deepwater Horizon disaster is the biggest on record.
