Pro-Gaddafi forces took the coastal town on Monday as they advanced eastwards towards the oil port of Ras Lanuf. It had been taken by the rebels on Saturday.
Rebels forces in eastern Libya were reported to be involved in fierce fighting with troops loyal to Colonel Gaddafi.
Rebels said their forces withdrew from Bin Jawad after coming under attack when they advanced.
