At least 39 people have been killed in fresh clashes between rival communities in the Tana River district of Kenya's Coast province, according to police.

Officers said 13 children and six women were among those killed in what was a revenge attack - though it has been suggested there was a political motive ahead of elections in March.

The BBC's Alex Jakana reports.
