French troops are taking part in operations against Islamists in northern Mali.

They have been sent by the French President, Francois Hollande, to help government forces take on Islamist rebels linked to Al Qaeda.

There's been heavy fighting between the Malian army and the Islamist rebels, who seized the north of the country last year.

Andrew Harding reports.
