Celebrations as Nelson Mandela turns 95 in hospital

18 July 2013 Last updated at 07:00 BST

South Africa's former President Nelson Mandela turned 95 on Thursday.

Still critically ill in hospital, his birthday is being marked with an added sense of poignancy although his daughter Zinzi says his health has "dramatically improved".

People are being encouraged to spend 67 minutes of their time doing "good acts" to reflect the 67 years Mr Mandela devoted to politics in South Africa.

Karen Allen reports from Johannesburg.
