China releases giant panda into the wild

7 November 2013 Last updated at 15:07 GMT

China has released a two-year old giant panda into the wild in the south-western Sichuan province.

Zhang Xiang was bred in captivity and her release aims to boost the slim population of pandas living in the wild.

But the operation is not without risks.

According to the Chinese media, of the ten pandas released in the wild since 1983, only two remain there. One died, another is believed to have died and six were brought back to a breeding centre, after suffering severe weight loss.
