Vigil and counter-protest mark Tiananmen anniversary

5 June 2014 Last updated at 00:05 BST

Tens of thousands have gathered in Hong Kong for the only major commemoration in China of the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre in Beijing.

The city is the only place on Chinese soil where such events are allowed - as it retains civil liberties not permitted to mainland Chinese.

Thousands gathered in Victoria Park holding banners and candles.

Juliana Liu was there.
