BBC reporter meets women submariners on USS Michigan

14 August 2014 Last updated at 02:45 BST

US Secretary of State John Kerry has announced an increase in the number of US Navy patrols in the Asia-Pacific region as a way of boosting America's presence.

USS Michigan is among them. The nuclear submarine has been modified to accommodate three women submariners in its crew of 170.

Only 60 women serve aboard US submarines. Submariner Lt Jennifer Charlton says it is the men who need to make the biggest adjustment.

Sharanjit Leyl reports.
